🛂 What is EES and What Changed at Schengen Borders?

The EES (Entry Exit System) became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It replaces passport stamps with digital biometric registration for all non-EU nationals. At your first entry into Schengen after EES launch, border officers collect 4 fingerprints and a facial photograph. This data is stored for 3 years. On subsequent entries, you simply scan your passport and fingers — no stamps needed. EES automatically calculates your remaining days under the 90/180 day rule, enabling the automatic detection of overstayers. It applies to all 29 Schengen countries and all non-EU nationals including those with visas and visa-exempt travelers.

❓ EES Schengen — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EES Entry Exit System Schengen?

EES is a new EU border system fully operational since 10 April 2026. It automatically records entries and exits of all non-EU nationals at Schengen borders using biometrics (fingerprints and facial image) instead of passport stamps. It tracks the 90/180 day rule automatically.

Does EES affect Moroccan and Algerian visa holders?

Yes. EES applies to all non-EU nationals including those with Schengen visas. Moroccans and Algerians traveling with a Type C Schengen visa must register biometrics at first entry. The 90/180 day rule is automatically calculated — overstays are immediately detected.

What biometric data does EES collect?

At first Schengen entry: fingerprints and a facial imagegraph. Data stored 3 years from last exit. On subsequent entries you just scan passport and fingers — takes seconds.

What is ETIAS and does it affect me?

ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers, scheduled for Q4 2026. It does NOT affect Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians or Egyptians — you still need a full Schengen visa. ETIAS affects UK citizens, Americans and other currently visa-exempt nationalities.

Does EES replace the Schengen visa?

No. EES is a border registration system — it does not replace the Schengen visa requirement. Nationals who need a Schengen visa still need one. EES is separate from the visa application process.
